Smart Financial Advice from a Successful Parent

George recently shared a thoughtful letter he received from the parent of one of his friends — a successful, self-made individual.

I found the advice so practical and grounded that I wanted to share a refined version here.

It reminded me strongly of the principles in The Millionaire Next Door — living below your means, making intentional decisions, and letting time work in your favor.

Here’s the heart of what was shared, with a few thoughts from my own experience:

Key Guiding Principles

  • Align your money with your life goals. Your finances should support the life you want — family, career, where you want to live, and your ability to give back.
  • You probably don’t need a paid investment advisor. Over a lifetime, advisor fees can cost you a significant amount of money.
  • Smart spending is as important as saving. Before buying something, don’t just ask “Can I afford this?” Ask, “Is this worth the price?”
One great example from the letter: At the airport, the writer saw a slice of pizza for over $15. Even though he could afford it, he decided it wasn’t worth the money. Small decisions like this, repeated over years, can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Stay financially literate. New apps, subscriptions, and “easy payment” options are designed to take your money. Corporations exist to maximize their shareholders’ wealth, not yours.
  • Avoid bad debt when possible. Pay off credit cards monthly. Use student loans wisely. Think carefully about large car payments.

Investing Basics

Start saving early — even small amounts matter. Build an emergency fund. Take full advantage of employer retirement matches. Keep investments simple with broad-market index funds.

My Added Perspective

While the letter offers excellent advice, I believe one area needs more emphasis for young people: generating income.

Saving and spending wisely are important, but learning how to earn more — through skills, side hustles, or entrepreneurship — can dramatically accelerate your progress when you’re young.

You’re already asking good questions. That’s one of the best signs you’re on the right path.

Power Principle

  • Minimum Survival Needs Come First

  • Then Strive for Comfort

  • Then Stretch to become Being Rich, Enjoying Luxury
