A neighbor told me yesterday he’s making his son switch colleges before sophomore year. The big-name school was going to cost $60,000 a year. After looking at the numbers, he decided it simply wasn’t worth it.

He’s not alone. Many families are facing the same tough choice right now.

My Honest Take

Yes, he is probably doing the right thing.

A $60,000-per-year price tag (often $240,000+ total with room and board) is a massive burden for most families. Even with some scholarships, the debt load can follow a young person for decades. The data shows that for many careers, the name on the diploma matters far less than what the graduate actually knows and can do.

Switching to a school that costs a fraction of that amount while still delivering a solid education is often the smarter long-term move. It reduces stress, avoids crushing debt, and frees up money that can be used for starting life after graduation — or even building a side hustle while in school.

Important Questions to Ask Before Switching

  • Will the new school still provide the quality of education and networking the student needs for their chosen field?
  • Does the student feel excited (or at least willing) about the change, or will it hurt motivation?
  • Are there strong transfer-credit policies so the first year isn’t wasted?
  • What are the true total costs (tuition + fees + housing + food) at both schools?

The Bigger Lesson

You don’t have to go to the most expensive school to get a great education. Many state schools, strong regional universities, and even community college + transfer routes produce very successful graduates with little or no debt.

The goal is debt-free (or very low debt) graduation so the young person starts adult life with freedom and options instead of a heavy monthly payment hanging over them.
