I Got Stuck With Terrible Loans Because I’m Not a Minority

Non-Minority Student – Disgruntled

I Got Stuck With Terrible Loans Because I'm Not a Minority

I’m a white male from a middle-class family. My parents make too much for most grants but not enough to pay for college outright. When I applied for aid, I was offered almost nothing but expensive private loans with terrible interest rates and awful terms.

I was furious. It felt like the system punished me for not fitting into any “special” category. I ended up taking the loans anyway because I really wanted to attend my chosen school. Now I’m deep in debt and angry about it.

I wish I had been smarter and chosen a more affordable option from the beginning. The name on the diploma isn’t worth this kind of burden. I’m sharing this because I want other non-minority students in similar situations to think twice before signing loans with bad terms.
