Debt-Free Degrees
The Four Military PathwaysThe Military Path to a Debt-Free Degree
One of the most powerful — and overlooked — ways to fund your college education requires no scholarship application, no FAFSA appeal, and no debt.
THE FOUR PATHWAYS:
1. THE POST-9/11 GI BILL
Serve 36 months on active duty and receive up to 36 months of: 100% public in-state tuition
- Monthly housing allowance
- Up to $1,000/year for books
- Even 90 days of service unlocks a prorated percentage of benefits.
2. MILITARY TUITION ASSISTANCE
Don't want to wait until after service? You don't have to. Active duty members can take college courses during off-duty hours — online or at night — with tuition assistance covering costs while you serve. Available to National Guard and Reserves too.
3. ROTC SCHOLARSHIPS
Haven't started college yet? Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps all offer merit-based ROTC scholarships covering full tuition, fees, and a monthly living stipend. Upon graduation you commission as an officer and serve a 4-8 year active duty commitment.
4. NATIONAL GUARD — STATE BENEFITS
Drill one weekend a month. Two weeks a year. In Florida, the Educational Dollars for Duty (EDD) program covers tuition at state universities entirely. Many states offer similar programs. Check your state's Guard benefits.
Military service isn't right for everyone — but for those it fits, it's one of the most complete debt-free education packages available anywhere.
