A Message to Garcia

I first came across "A message to Garcia" while reading Roy H. Williams outstanding book, The Wizard of Ads.

Not just about marketing, the book is must reading for anyone seriously interested in thinking critically about their values and the purpose of their own Life.

"A Message to Garcia" is an essay written by Elbert Hubbard in 1899. It emphasizes the importance of initiative, responsibility, and dedication in carrying out tasks.

The essay tells the story of Lieutenant Andrew S. Rowan, who was tasked during the Spanish-American War with delivering a critical message to General Calixto García, a Cuban rebel leader, without clear instructions on how to find him. Rowan took on the mission without hesitation, navigated challenges, and successfully delivered the message.

The key takeaway is the value of a self-reliant, determined individual who takes responsibility for completing a task without needing constant guidance or excuses. Hubbard praises Rowan's work ethic and contrasts it with those who lack initiative, shirk duties, or require excessive supervision.

The essay became widely popular, often used to inspire diligence and accountability in work and life.
